HIV and STI Testing – What I Need to Know

  • STI and HIV testing is free.
  • All health records are confidential.
  • Both MCPH Clinics offer free testing.
  • STI symptoms may vary, and sometimes there are no symptoms. However, if you think you may have symptoms related to an STI, please contact the Health Department or your provider to schedule an appointment.
  • CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once in their lifetime. For people with certain risk factors, CDC recommends getting tested at least once a year. CDC recommends testing at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Those who have multiple or anonymous partners should be tested more frequently (e.g., every 3 to 6 months).

What is PrEP?

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that reduces your chances of getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV.

  • PrEP – PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily pill OR every 2-month injection that can reduce your risk of acquiring HIV from sex by 90%.
  • PrEP can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV from sharing needles by more than 70%.
  • PrEP has greater effectiveness when taken as prescribed.
  • PrEP should not be taken unless prescribed to you
  • Since PrEP only protects against HIV, condom use is still important for protection against other STIs.
